Hair Loss 101
Hair loss 101: Although there are a multitude of causes for hair loss, most men and women who loose their hair do so because of a genetic predisposition-"genes" they have inherited from their father or mother. This "patterned" hair loss is extremely common and worsens with age, affecting about 50% of women beyond the age of 40 and about 15% of 18-29 years old men, 50% of men between the ages of 40 and 49 and 80% men over the age of 70! The common characteristic of patterned hair loss in men and women is "miniaturization" where the hair gradually and insidiously changes from normal "terminal" hair follicles to "miniaturized" follicles that no longer cycle normally, become thinner and finer and loose their color, eventually falling out! Unfortunately, patterned hair loss results in loss of hair throught one's life time. The hair loss process doesn't stop until most or all the hair is lost, except for the "horshoe" of preserved hair noted even in the baldest of men. Likewise, hair loss in women results in progressive thinning in spite of preservation of the frontal hair line. Patients experiencing hair loss should seek evaluation as soon as possible. The sooner the diagnosis for the hair loss is made the sooner treatment may be started and the hair loss process arrested.
